When looking into arranging a rental car, you might have asked the question, is it possible to rent a car for someone else? Today we are going to look into this and give you the definitive answer by offering up a few different situations.
More Than One Driver
If you are going on a trip with friends, then it’s likely that you will be taking turns to drive. In this case, the answer to ‘Can I rent a car for someone else?’ is ‘yes’. However, all named drivers must show up to the counter when you are picking up the car and present a valid driver’s license. It is not possible for someone to legally drive the car who hasn’t been listed as a named driver on your rental vehicle. So, while you can book and pay for the car, everyone needs to be there when you go to collect it.
Booking for Your Employer
Oftentimes, those in assistant or secretarial roles will have to book a car for their employers. This is also entirely possible, however you will need to make sure that you book it for your employer and not for you. This means that the reservation is in your employer’s name and they will need to pick it up themselves. You cannot pick it up for them, even if you are a named driver on it. As we explained above, all named drivers need to be present when getting the vehicle from the rental company in order to show their license to those working at the counter.
In short, it is possible that you can rent a car for someone else, however, only in the sense that you make the booking, or you are both named as drivers and are there when it is picked up. Being able to make a booking for someone else is very convenient for employees or those wanting to help someone arrange travel.
